At Home in New Mexico

Something I have loved about the winter is that I have gotten to visit family, travel, and have time to focus on personal photography projects. During this time, I usually don’t edit too much, as my main focus is to explore my ideas. By the time spring comes and I go back home, I start to go through all my winter photos. It is always a nice surprise to see what I have captured, learned, and what still needs more improvement…. There is something nice about giving my work some space before I see it on the screen. Maybe a little bit of detachment?

For this documentary project, my partner, daughter, and I were going to visit my mom in New Mexico. My sister and her husband were going to be there, a cousin and her family too. I was excited. I knew I wanted to photograph our time there.

I was looking for the little moments. The subtleties that happen in an instant. For a whole month I photographed. I documented our life inside the house, I photographed the desert around the house and kept observing. I originally had an idea of weaving black and white images with color desert images, but in the end I decided to focus on our lives inside the house.
